I recently published a post detailing why I think the Charlotte Hornets will win the 2021 NBA Summer League. I laid out some potential options for Charlotte’s summer roster and what they would each bring to the team. However, I just found out something about a player I included in that post. 2020 draftee Grant Riller is no longer under contract with the Charlotte Hornets. He was on a two-way deal this past season, playing for Charlotte’s G League affiliate Greensboro Swarm, but he is now an unrestricted free agent. He will play with Charlotte in the Summer League, but I have no idea why Riller is not under contract with an NBA team. Someone needs to sign him ASAP.

Grant Riller Is a Walking Bucket

Grant Riller has done nothing but prove that he deserves an NBA contract. During a four-year college career at College of Charleston, the 6-3 guard averaged 18.7 points per game shooting 51.9% from the field and 35.6% from three. He was drafted with the No. 56 pick in the 2020 Draft by the Hornets and signed to a two-way contract. While with the Greensboro Swarm last season, Riller played in 11 of a possible 15 games. In those games, he averaged 13.1 points and 3.5 assists per game while shooting 49.0% from the field and 46.2% from three. He appeared in seven games for the Hornets, averaging less than four minutes a game. However, he still converted on 66% of his field goal attempts and 50% of his threes in that small sample size.

Grant Riller has been a walking bucket at every level. 46% from three-point range on over four attempts per game is no joke. Affordable shotmakers are hard to find these days, so it’s honestly incredible to me that Riller doesn’t have a contract yet. NBA teams need to get smart and sign this sniper to a deal.
