Even as one of the most successful college basketball coaches over the last two decades with Gonzaga Basketball, Mark Few still finds ways to adapt to the changing landscape. Per Theo Lawson of The Spokesman-Review, Few has taken a unique approach to handling his players’ technical fouls this season.
The Zags have picked up five techs in the team’s last eight games, resulting in Few going so far as to fine his own players for the costly fouls.
“They’re actually paying fines, just like NBA guys. Now that they’re making money, they can pay fines. They’ll figure it out or it’ll cost them a lot of money.”
Veteran point guard Ryan Nembhard shed some light on how much money Mark Few is charging for technical fouls.
“I think it’s just $5,000 consistent now. At a certain point, he just figured out you’ve got to pay the $5,000. We’re getting way too many techs. So, you won’t see me getting no techs, that’s for sure.”
Khalif Battle gave an amusing reaction to learning he could be facing a fine after picking up his first tech of the season in Gonzaga’s recent game against Loyola Marymount.
“Fine? Oh, he said I’m getting fined? I’ve got to talk to coach about that one. […] I’ve got to keep my [money]. That’s my chicken right there.”
As college basketball continues to change with the rise of NIL and revenue sharing, perhaps other programs will take a similar disciplinary approach to Mark Few in the near future.
The Zags (17-7, 8-3 WCC) will play at Pacific on Saturday.
