One down, two to go. Jonathan Marchessault, Chandler Stephenson, and Noah Hanifin are among the big fish who are set to hit the open market this Summer. The latter has now been extended by the VGK. Hanifin and the Golden Knights have agreed to an eight-year contract extension to keep the left-shot defenseman in Vegas long term.
The team was actually the first to report the news:
“VEGAS (April 11, 2024) – Vegas Golden Knights General Manager Kelly McCrimmon announced today, April 11, that the club has signed defenseman Noah Hanifin to an eight-year contract extension worth an average annual value of $7,350,000.“
Hanifin, 27, has played in 16 games with the team after the VGK executed a trade with the Flames. Draft picks and Daniil Miromanov were sent to Calgary as part of the deal. Hanifin has proved to be a great fit with the team since day one. It’s a contract they had to get done. Since the trade, Hanifin is a +7 with an expected goal rate of 55. Oh, and he also leads the team in ice time (23:02). He’s also taken over as the powerplay QB.
The embed post kind of goes through what’s to come with the offseason. For those that want to look back on it, now would be a good time to do so now that we know the official number for Hanifin. The VGK can bring back Stephenson and Marchessault. They will just need to open up some cap space. Brett Howden is an obvious dump candidate. Beyond that, maybe it’s one of Zach Whitecloud, Brayden McNabb, or Adin Hill?
