The Vegas Golden Knights selected Trevor Connelly with the 19th pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. A few months later, it’s safe to say the VGK feel very good about the pick they made in the sphere last year.
Connelly, 18, is already the best prospect in the farm system for Vegas. The team website for the Golden Knights recently wrote a puff piece about him and it’s fairly obvious they’re happy with this pick. If you want to read that piece, you can do so here. If you want the spark notes, it’s got some quotes from Connelly in there while positively updating you on his status since the draft.
Yes, it’s totally propaganda but Vegas has good reason to sell the fans on Connelly’s future. At the World Juniors, the current University of Providence winger was one of the best players in the entire tournament.
Connelly helped Team USA win gold and posted four points in seven games. He’s also got 11 points in his first 12 games with Providence too.
Eye test wise, he appears to be incredibly skilled. A fast skater with serious offensive upside. It’s pretty clear now that concerns about his character were the only reason he fell so far on draft day. As long as that side stays positive, the VGK have a serious gem here.
The craziest part about the Connelly pick is the fact that Vegas somehow acquired Noah Hanifin and Tomas Hertl at the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline. They did it by sending their 2025 first rounder to San Jose and the 2026 first rounder to Calgary. By the way, the way the team is playing, those picks are going to be significantly lower than where they got Connelly.
Kelly McCrimmon is running a clinic. It’s hard to question anything he’s done. They just always feel one step ahead. Having a prospect in the system like this while doing the damage they did at the deadline is all the proof you need.
All I know is, you have to be an absolute jackass to criticize what Vegas has done with the prospect pool!
