NHL training camps are opening up around the league. Even players getting ready to be placed on LTIR must attend so that the medical file is reported to indicate that the individual is unfit to play. Robin Lehner didn’t show up to training camp and now the Golden Knights are evaluating their options.
Frank Seravalli over at Daily Faceoff has reported the following:
“The Vegas Golden Knights are reviewing their options, up to and including contract termination, after goaltender Robin Lehner failed to attend training camp for a mandatory pre-season medical exam required to confirm his ineligibility to play, multiple sources told Daily Faceoff.”
“The Golden Knights have consulted with the NHL on the issue, which in turn, has been in touch with the NHL Players’ Association regarding proper contractual treatment in light of a situation which includes unique circumstances.”
It goes without saying that this is going to be a huge deal for both sides. Lehner has just this year remaining on his contract. He’s due $4.5 million in cash but carries an AAV of $5 million this season. If Vegas could actually clear his money from the books, they would actually be under the cap and wouldn’t need to operate the season on LTIR.
If Vegas were to clear Lehner’s money from the books, they would enter the season with approximately $1.3 million in cap space, which they will have anyway but wouldn’t have to operate in LTIR. It goes without saying, adding at the tradeline becomes much easier.
