The New York Giants are rolling the dice on a premier talent. They’re only giving up a 2024 7th round pick to do it too. Former Clemson product Isaiah Simmons has been traded to the Giants for that 7th rounder.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news:
Yes, I’m using a picture of Simmons in a Clemson uniform. There’s no point in using his Cardinals jersey because he did basically nothing during his time in Arizona. Part of the problem for Simmons is the fact that he doesn’t have a position. He’s just kinda thrown everywhere hoping that he does all the work. Some of the blame has to go to the Cardinals for failing to develop the talent.
2023 was Simmons’ best year as a pro. With Arizona, Simmons notched four sacks, 99 tackles, and two interceptions. The biggest thing for Simmons moving forward is going to be having a plan for the guy. Wink Martindale is a hell of a defensive coordinator. It’s exactly what I said in my draft profile years ago. The tools are there but a plan needs to be in place here. I can’t stress that part enough.
The Cardinals already declined Simmons’ 5th year option so he’s in the final year of his contract. It’s a smart buy low for the Giants. If they can rebuild his value, they can get a comp pick that’s higher the following offseason if he leaves via free agency. If it doesn’t work out, it costs them a 7th rounder which doesn’t pan out 90% of the time.
