The Boston Red Sox have signed starting pitcher Garrett Crochet to a six-year, $170 million extension, ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan was the first to report Monday.
Crochet, 25, was acquired by the Red Sox in the offseason from the Chicago White Sox in a prospect package headlined by Kyle Teel and Braden Montgomery.
He initially set a deadline to sign an extension before Opening Day, stating that he would “rather not” do the extension during the regular season. Well, here we have it: Crochet will be a Red Sox for the foreseeable future.
The contract will begin in the 2026 season and extend through 2030, his age-31 season, per Passan. After 2030, there will be an opt out with one year, $28.3 million left on his contract, according to Spotrac. He was going to be entering his third season of arbitration next year, the final year of his current contract.
While he doesn’t have a crazy amount of innings to his plate, Crochet is regarded as one of the best left-handed pitchers in the game. He’s only thrown more than 55 innings just once over his professional career: Last year, when he threw 146.0 frames in his first as a starter.
On one hand, that does carry some risk. But he also hasn’t entered his physical prime yet and will be on the books for less than $30 million per year. At his age, that’s a bargain.
