Fulham signs Calvin Bassey from Ajax

Fulham announced the signing of Nigerian international Calvin Bassey from Ajax on Friday.

The club has paid a €22.5 million ($24.8 million) fee to secure his services. He has signed a four-year contract with the club that will keep him at Fulham until 2027 with an option to extend an additional year. He will wear jersey No. 3 next year.

Bassey was born in Italy but grew up in London. He joined Leicester City’s academy at the age of 15 where he progressed through the youth ranks until he was signed by Rangers in 2020. After a successful two years with Rangers in which he won a league title and helped the club reach the Europa League final, he moved to Ajax in the Eredivisie.

With Ajax, he made 39 appearances in all competitions, including in the Champions League. Now, he will be moving back to London to join a high-flying Fulham team that had a great 2022-23 Premier League season.

I’m happy it’s all done now and I can just focus on the football and help the team build on last season, when they did amazing.”

This is a good signing for Fulham. He is a versatile player who can play as both a left-back and a left-sided center-back, although he prefers center-back. He will provide extra defensive depth for Fulham during the upcoming season.

While Fulham’s captain Tim Ream has been outstanding for the club as a left-sided center-back, he is 35 years old. The 23-year-old Bassey will be able to learn from Ream, and hopefully for Fulham, will be able to replace him in a few years.
