Just days after entering the transfer portal, former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara has found his new home for the foreseeable future. McNamara will stay in the Big Ten and transfer to Iowa, ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to report Thursday.
This is a good fit for Iowa, who are without a starting quarterback, with Spencer Petras graduating and Alex Padilla entering the transfer portal. Kirk Ferentz’s offense has been wretched — in part because of the quarterback spot — for Iowa for the better part of the last four seasons. In three of those seasons, they’ve placed in the bottom-five (in the Big Ten) in total offense, first downs per game and in the bottom-six in scoring offense. McNamara helps mitigate those dire struggles.
While Michigan relied on its ground game and dominating in the trenches last season, McNamara was still a steady presence behind center, making the All-Big Ten third-team and completing 64.2 percent of his attempts for 2,576 yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions. He helped lead the Wolverines to their first victory over Ohio State in eight years, in addition to their first Big Ten Title (over Iowa!) since 2004 and first ever College Football Playoff appearance.
McNamara got off to a shaky start, though his season got cut short after suffering a knee injury on Sept. 17 against UConn, eventually receiving season-ending surgery in early November. The former four-star recruit, who originally committed to Notre Dame before heading to Michigan, threw for 3,181 yards, 21 touchdowns and seven interceptions over his three-year Michigan career. He is expected to have just two years of eligibility remaining.
This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.
