Former Maryland Big Damonte Dodd Defends Mark Turgeon

Former Maryland Basketball head coach Mark Turgeon was heavily criticized leading up to his resignation partway through the 2021-22 season. Although it was the best move for both sides, Turgeon is still not viewed in a positive light by the vast majority of Terp fans. Former Maryland big man Damonte Dodd made an appearance on Matthew Gordon’s All Things Sports podcast to defend his coach.

Here’s what he had to say:

“It hurts to see like a lot of the stuff that people were saying about him like on Twitter and stuff, because it’s not true. It wasn’t true. None of it was true. You can say what you want to say about him as a coach. I thought he was a great coach. I learned a lot from him. As you can see, my transition from my freshman year to my senior year, most of that’s because of him. You know, me just learning from him. So it’s like, a lot of that stuff it’s just not true, what they were saying and all that kind of stuff. I spoke up about it. I put a Facebook post up, and I think I said something else on Instagram.”

Dodd continued:

“But you know, in today’s society that we live in, people are gonna have their own opinions and they’re gonna say what they want to say. But only the real really knows and, like you said, and even as you being a fan and being from the outside, you probably didn’t believe half of that nonsense. It is what it is. And he left a great legacy because he literally turned that basketball program around. He came in, they weren’t good. That’s credited to Mark Turgeon and his staff and the people that he had.”

Dodd suited up for Maryland Basketball from 2013-2017. He averaged 3.5 points per game over 119 appearances and finished in the program’s top ten for career blocks. Dodd plans to play in The Basketball Tournament this summer for team “Shell Shock” alongside other Maryland alumni.
