Florida’s Graham Mertz Will Miss Remainder Of 2024 Season

It has been a rough season for the Florida Gators. They are 3-3 on the year, set to enter the teeth of their brutal schedule, and they will be doing so without Graham Mertz.

During Saturday’s overtime loss to Tennessee, Mertz suffered a torn ACL, which will put an end to his season and, unfortunately, to his collegiate career. The injury was suffered without contact, as he was rolling back after making a pass, and his knee landed awkwardly on the field. Mertz was helped off the field and returned to the sidelines in a brace and crutches.

It has been a rough go of it for Graham Mertz, as his season ended prematurely last season, as he fractured his collarbone in the second to last game of the season against Missouri.

Florida now turns to DJ Lagway to lead this team for the foreseeable future. Lagway and Mertz have both seen playing time this season, as Lagway got the start in week two as Mertz suffered a concussion in week one. In that game, Lagway would throw for 456 yards, with many fans and media people suggesting he should remain the starter. Obviously, we wish it was under different circumstances, but Lagway is now the guy.

The Florida Gators play Kentucky, Georgia, Texas, LSU, Ole Miss, and Florida State, in that order, for the remainder of the season. The loss of leadership that Graham Mertz brings to the table will be hard to overcome, but DJ Lagway is supremely talented and could potentially keep the Gators in some of these games. They will be fighting an uphill battle for the remainder of the season, but this stretch will be about developing Lagway into a premier SEC Quarterback.
