Five Under-the-Radar Playoff Heroes Who Could Steal the 2025 Stanley Cup Spotlight

As the 2025 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs progress through the second round, superstars like McDavid, Matthews, and MacKinnon dominate headlines. Still, several lesser-known players are making crucial impacts that could ultimately determine who hoists the Cup.

Hockey’s postseason often elevates unexpected heroes, and this year is no exception, particularly in hockey-crazed markets where interest extends beyond the ice. Alberta sports betting activity, for example, has surged as fans increasingly monitor new developments during playoffs, and news and track the performances of depth players who often fly under the radar but make significant impacts in key moments. This growing attention reflects a broader appreciation for the nuanced storylines that emerge beyond the star players.

Connor Brown – Edmonton Oilers

After an underwhelming regular season with just 13 goals and 21 assists, Brown has transformed into a playoff catalyst for the Oilers. With 4 goals and 3 assists through 10 games, his production has been timely, including a three-point performance (1 goal, 2 assists) in Edmonton’s series-clinching Game 6 victory over the Kings. While McDavid and Draisaitl command attention, Brown’s two-way play and penalty-killing expertise have become invaluable as the Oilers lead Vegas 3-1 in their second-round series.

Calvin Pickard – Edmonton Oilers

Perhaps no player embodies the under-the-radar hero concept better than Pickard. The 33-year-old career backup stepped in when Stuart Skinner faltered against Los Angeles with the Oilers down 0-2 in the series. Pickard responded by winning four consecutive games to clinch the first round. His 4-0 playoff record with a 2.93 GAA has provided Edmonton the goaltending stability they’ve desperately sought. Despite his perfect record, Pickard remains overshadowed by flashier playoff netminders.

Wyatt Johnston – Dallas Stars

The 21-year-old sophomore is emerging as Dallas’s clutch performer despite his youth. Johnston etched his name in Stars history by scoring just 9 seconds into Game 5 against Colorado, which was the fastest playoff goal ever for the franchise. His most significant contribution came in Game 7, netting the series-clinching goal with just 3:56 remaining. Johnston’s timely scoring has helped Dallas take a 2-1 lead over Winnipeg in the second round, despite operating in the shadow of the Stars’ veteran core.

Jesper Boqvist – Florida Panthers

Boqvist arrived in Florida without fanfare but has elevated his game during the Panthers’ playoff push. Building on his career-best regular season offensive numbers, the 25-year-old forward has continued his strong play into the postseason. Florida’s depth has been tested in their series against Toronto, currently tied 2-2, and Boqvist represents the team’s successful strategy of finding value in overlooked talent. While Barkov and Tkachuk grab headlines, Boqvist’s consistent contributions have helped Florida even this highly competitive series.

Bobby McMann – Toronto Maple Leafs

After finishing the regular season on a tear with multiple multi-point games, McMann has brought physical intensity to Toronto’s playoff run. The 27-year-old late bloomer has carved out an essential role in the Leafs’ bottom six, providing energy and disruption against Florida, including a notable confrontation with Brad Marchand. Toronto’s star-studded forward group often overshadows McMann’s contributions, but his physical edge adds a dimension the skill-heavy Leafs desperately need as they head into a pivotal Game 5.

As the playoffs deepen, these five players could ultimately determine their teams’ fate. Hockey’s postseason history is filled with unlikely heroes who seized the moment when it mattered most-and any of these five could be the next to etch their name in Stanley Cup lore.
