Every fan of a competitive team feels like they’re dealing with the same issue. The NHL salary cap hasn’t gone up in forever and teams had to sacrifice players they otherwise would have been able to keep if the cap had simply gone up in a reasonable way. Vegas had that problem with Reilly Smith. Boston had this problem with Tyler Bertuzzi.
Now that we’re in the midst of the 2023-24 NHL Season, it feels pretty obvious that Bertuzzi just wants to play for the Bruins. There have been a flurry of events that continue to make you believe that Bertuzzi will re-join the Bruins next year.
Let me ask you this. Have you ever heard an opposing player call Brad Marchand a “good guy”?
That really happened – (“He’s a good guy,” Bertuzzi told reporters Thursday.)
When Toronto played Boston, Marchand predictably took someone out. Bertuzzi’s reaction? He laughed about it.
Again, I’ll ask the same question. Have you ever seen an opposing player laugh at Brad Marchand while watching him take a teammate out?
I’d also like to remind readers that Bertuzzi took a one-year deal in Toronto. Something that seems to be a calculated move. The Bruins were simply in cap hell this year and should have more room heading into next year. The dead money bonuses for Patrice Bergeron and David Krejci come off the books and the cap is finally going up next year.
It really feels like Bertuzzi left his heart in Boston. He’s not even trying to hide it. Bertuzzi wants to play for the Bruins. Don’t be surprised if he heads back to Boston when he hits the open market again this upcoming Summer.
