Jacob Markstrom finally got moved. Markstrom landing in Jersey felt inevitable for a while. Now that it’s happened, let’s talk about everything you need to know from a fantasy hockey perspective.
Markstrom, 34, will now be in a tandem with Jake Allen. With that in mind, don’t expect Markstrom to play all 82 games, obviously. He will probably be in the 45-55 games played mark. Allen is another veteran who can handle a backup role. Nor does Jersey want to run Markstrom into the ground when the playoffs start. Let’s just keep expectations in mind from that angle.
Jersey got terrible goalie play last year but there is no reason to suggest that level of horrible play will continue. The coach is different and the entire D core will look different. All the young guns like Luke Hughes and Simon Nemec are another year older. Add in healthy Dougie Hamilton and Jersey should be much better in terms of just being responsible in their own end.
Markstrom is a career .909% mark. His team in Jersey is much better than what he had to deal with in Calgary. Don’t underestimate that part of it. Maybe the age will start to show but people should feel optimistic Markstrom will put together a quality season.
This is what I’d say. Investing in Markstrom makes sense. He would be on a shortlist of goalies I’d want for my team. Just don’t do it inside the top 100 picks. Let the draft fall to you with any one of these goalies. It’s always the way to go.
