The Vegas Golden Knights lost two key pieces of their roster with Jonathan Marchessault and Chandler Stephenson departing for big paydays. Still, the VGK were active in trying to replace the pieces that left the roster. Alexander Holtz, Akira Schmid, Ilya Samsonov, and Victor Olofsson were all added this offseason. Let’s talk about everything you need to know in terms of fantasy hockey.
Akira Schmid
All indications point to Schmid being the third goalie/AHL starter to begin the season. Vegas’ blue line is so good that he’s an instant spot starter whenever called into duty depending on the matchup. Both Adin Hill and Samsonov can run hot and cold. If Schmid is pushed into action, he’s worth a look but that’s on a wait and see approach only.
Alexander Holtz
What an opportunity Holtz has in Vegas. The guy goes from being in the dog house to the penthouse overnight. Holtz is expected to take over top line duties in Vegas and will be flanked by Jack Eichel. The same spot Marchessault pocked 42 goals. Why can’t the former 7th overall pick in 2020 net 20-30 goals in that same role?
Holtz scored 16 goals last season for Jersey while playing 4th line minutes. He’s always been a guy who has goal scoring potential. Heading into age 23, this may be a flier that’s worth jumping on. Especially if Holtz gets off to a hot start you might never get your hands on him again.
This Vegas team is really good. They’re loaded down the middle and on the blue line. Holtz just might be the beneficiary of a lot of easy bunnies that Eichel sets up. He’s worth a late round flier either way.
Ilya Samsonov
Sean Burke and Bruce Cassidy seem to have success with every goalie they get their hands on. Samsonov was a fantasy darling two years ago. He also had success in Washington. It’s just been inconsistent and all over the map.
If you’re like me and you take the zero-goalie approach, Samsonov is a great target deep in drafts. Who knows, it’s not impossible he takes over the net midseason as Hill has struggled to stay healthy. He should have good team defense on his side and the wins should be there. At worst, he’s worth a look as a waiver claim to play certain matchups.
Victor Olofsson
Olofsson will likely be the Michael Amadio replacement. He could be moved to the top line if Holtz turns out to be a bust. He’s played with Jack Eichel before and maybe can rekindle that chemistry. He’s undrafted for now but someone to keep on the radar in case the change of scenery sparks him. Something that can’t be ruled out.
