It actually happened. Mitch Marner is on his way to Vegas, and we have fantasy hockey angles to sort through. We’re not cheesing this intro paragraph any longer than we have to. Let’s have a quick chat about all of it.
Marner, 28, comes to Vegas after posting over 100 points a season ago. Sure, playing with Auston Matthews helps, but Jack Eichel is that dude. He gets to play with a true number one center again, and there’s no reason Marner shouldn’t be electric offensively again. His postseason struggles have nothing to do with regular season hockey.
The only real question is who is going to score? Both Marner and Eichel are natural playmakers. It’s time for Eichel to be more aggressive putting the puck in the back of the net. Otherwise, this fit works well, especially the way Eichel plays with a true 200-foot game.
This is the real intriguing part of the deal. How does Marner impact the powerplay? Vegas’ powerplay was off the charts a year ago. They were second in the NHL, converting 28.3% of their chances. Tomas Hertl had a ton to do with that. Now you’re adding Marner to that group, which already includes Eichel, Hertl, Mark Stone, and Shea Theodore. Yeah…
Expect more of the same. He’s going to be around 100 points again, and if that’s the case, he’s a top 20 pick in fantasy, no question about it.
If you’re curious about the Toronto angle of this, Roy is probably their third line center, which means he has zero fantasy value, and has never had any since turning pro.
