Fantasy Football: Rams Sign Davante Adams

The Rams have essentially picked Davante Adams over Cooper Kupp. With Kupp likely on his way out and Adams locked into a contract with the Rams, it’s time to go over everything you need to know from a fantasy football perspective!

Let me start out by saying this. The Adams signing with LA makes more sense in real life than it does for fantasy. Adams, 32, clearly wanted to return to the West Coast. Adams played collegiate ball at Fresno State and is from East Palo Alto, California. To finish out the remaining productive years of his career, this is clearly the spot he wanted to be.

Beyond that, I’m not sure you can love it for fantasy. Yes, the situation with the Rams is better than he dealt with in dysfunctional New York. I’ll grant you that. The problem is the quarterback makes the receiver and Matthew Stafford is very much on the decline.

Stafford is about to enter his age 37 season and is coming off a 2024-25 season where he threw 20 touchdowns in 16 games played. Those 20 touchdowns ranked 15th among quarterbacks last year and the players tied or slightly behind him on the list are all much younger and ascending players. Having Sean McVay obviously helps but he can only do so much.

Maybe you can make the argument that Adams will elevate Stafford but I’m not sure you can really argue that he’s a significant upgrade over Cooper Kupp. Maybe you could say that about the version of Adams from five years ago. Not now.

When Adams was really rolling in fantasy, he was a total touchdown hog. From 2020-22 he averaged 11 touchdowns per season. Do we actually think Adams will compile over 50% of Stafford’s touchdown totals? We know who the touchdown hog is with the Rams. His name is Kyren Williams and I don’t see that changing unless it’s Blake Corum who carves out more of that role.

I’m not telling you to avoid Adams. I’m telling you to make sure your expectations are in line. We very much know that Puka Nacua is going to get his looks and remain the first option in this offense. It’s a matter of how much Stafford has left in the tank to also support Adams in a meaningful way. The days of Adams being an elite WR1 are over. If you can get Adams at a reasonable WR2-3 range, knock yourself out.
