Fantasy Football: Raiders Acquire Geno Smith

Regardless of the fact that it makes zero sense that the Raiders traded a third round pick to acquire Geno Smith, fantasy football managers have to deal with the cards we’re dealt. Now that Geno is the new starting QB of the Raiders, let’s have a quick chat on everything you need to know from a fantasy perspective.

Geno was QB13 last year while playing a fully healthy season in Seattle. Technically QB17 on a points per game basis. The year before that he was QB19. Technically QB25 on a points per game basis in 2023.

I’m not sure who needs to hear this but Geno is now going to be 35 in October and the Raiders are a far worse supporting cast than what he had in Seattle. The offensive line is worse. The running backs are worse. The wide receivers are worse. Everything is worse minus Brock Bowers who proved he can produce with just about anybody throwing him the ball.

I think the only thing you’re encouraged about is the fact that Chip Kelly is the OC. Kelly is a quality playcaller who will do a good job getting the Raiders to be more up tempo and organized. Outside of that, it’s hard to feel optimistic about this situation. Did everyone forget the Raiders still suck and are clearly still a last place team even after this trade?

Are we sure this is even an upgrade over Gardner Minshew? Both guys are career journeymen who need support to do anything. Again, Geno is aging and is already coming off a season where he threw 21 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. He’s now another year older while inserting himself on a worse and more dysfunctional team.

Here’s my advice for the real people out there who have balls and play in superflex leagues. Geno should be treated as a QB3 bye week filler. You should try to get two guys better than Geno for your team and have him be your third guy. Any other strategy that spends more money than that in your auction league on Geno is a crazy one. By the way, the draft hasn’t happened yet, and the possibility Geno gets benched late season in favor of whoever Vegas drafts is a real possibility here. That part is TBD based on the draft though.
