Fantasy Football: Jets Sign Justin Fields

Justin Fields is going to be the new starting quarterback of the New York Jets. With free agency on going, I’m going to do a bunch of fantasy football follow up so here is the Fields one coming in hot. Let’s have a chat about how you should proceed from here as a fantasy manager.

I can’t start anywhere other than here. Fields runs. That’s it. Point blank, period. We all know by now that running quarterbacks are a bit of a hidden cheat code in fantasy. It’s going to be about if Fields can be productive beyond what he’s going to give you in the rushing department.

Fields, 26, actually took care of the football last year. The former Ohio State product posted a 5-1 TD to INT ratio in six starts last year but also cashed in on five rushing touchdowns. The Jets are far more dysfunctional than the Steelers but there’s actually reason to be optimistic the situation in New York won’t be a total dumpster fire.

Aaron Glenn is the new head coach and he took a former Lions assistant with him to be the OC. The coaching part is a huge unknown right now but I can’t imagine it’s going to be worse than last year. You know, Robert Saleh being a total clown, getting fired midseason, and then having substitute teacher Jeff Ulbrich take over while not having a clue what he was doing. It remains to be seen what Glenn will bring to the table but regardless, it will at least be more stable than last year in New York.

The pure roster really isn’t as bad as it seems either. Garrett Wilson is a really nice weapon and the two played together at Ohio State. Between Breece Hall and Braelon Allen, that’s a nice RB tandem too. The OL isn’t totally barren either. Olu Fashanu and Alijah Vera-Tucker is at least a nice foundation to further build upon.

I actually don’t mind investing in Fields this year for fantasy, especially if you have balls and play in a Superflex league where the quarterback market gets thin quickly. The rushing upside is there and he’s starting to grow into a real player. He was QB6 during the first six weeks of last season (mostly because of the rushing). If Fields is your third QB in a Superflex league, you’re sitting pretty. Maybe don’t get into a crazy bidding war but this is a player I’d target if the price is right.
