Fantasy Football: DK Metcalf Traded To Pittsburgh

We got some big news on the Eve of free agency. DK Metcalf requested a trade but now he finally has a new home. The former Ole Miss product has been dealt to the Pittsburgh Steelers. You read the title so you already know what this is about so let’s just get to the point because I have some thoughts.

I don’t think there is any way to slice this. Metcalf’s fantasy value just plummeted.

A: We have no idea who the Steelers quarterback will be next year. The most likely scenario seems to be Justin Fields. A run first guy who hasn’t proven he can uplift a fantasy relevant wide receiver. If it’s not Fields, that odds are that they probably won’t find someone capable.

In fairness, Seattle didn’t have the best QB play either but we’re also talking about a complete philosophy switch here. Seattle went 3WR heavy looks constantly last year. Pittsburgh couldn’t even sustain a secondary target last year, let alone three.

B: It feels impossible to trust Mike Tomlin. We’re fully aware by now that he doesn’t care about us. He cares about running the ball and playing defense. There isn’t going to be any need to get DK his looks, especially with another year of uncertain quarterback play. It’s going to be more of the same. Not to mention the fact that Arthur Smith’s offense hasn’t put together any big fantasy seasons at the wide receiver position either. He’s a tight end guy at heart and Pat Freiermuth is actually the one guy who has taken strides.

C: What happens with George Pickens? This feels like it could get ugly. Pickens doesn’t see the ball enough as it is. Now DK is coming in there and wants his looks. Pickens just saw DK get paid and probably wants the number 14 too.

I have no idea where DK will be ranked in terms of fantasy next year but he’s a hard pass. This Steelers offense is just not one that I want my wide receiver to be part of. For as talented as DK is, he sure might get some red zone looks. Beyond that, this feels muddy and I can’t imagine anything will change given how stubborn and rigid Tomlin is.
