The Denver Broncos finally have a real tight end after signing Evan Engram. Will it translate to fantasy football success? C’mon, you’re smart and read the title so I don’t think an intro paragraph is necessary here so let’s get to the good stuff.
I think we have to start with one obvious caveat here. I don’t predict injuries. Nobody can but it’s hard to deny the track record here. Early in his Giants career, he had drop issues and couldn’t stay on the field. Then found some success in Jacksonville but this past year couldn’t stay healthy again. With the former Ole Miss product about to head into his age 31 season, can we count on him staying on the field? Nobody has the answer to that but it feels like far from a guarantee.
It’s really a matter of how close can Engram get to replicating his 2023 Season? If he does that, he’s a top five tight end for fantasy next year. We’re talking about a guy who had 143 targets in 2023. Just an insane number. Given the way Sean Payton likes to spread the ball around in his offense, I can’t imagine he’s going to get close to that number but he should still have plenty of balls coming his way.
Casual fans will ignore this fact but the Broncos actually have a decent amount of mouths to feed here. We’re talking about Courtland Sutton, Marvin Mims, Troy Franklin, and Devaughn Vele who are all capable bodies. Is Engram the second option in the offense? I’d argue that maybe he’s third or fourth depending on if Mims and Franklin continue to take strides forward.
I don’t think Engram is a top five tight end for me in fantasy next year but I don’t mind him any time after that. I’d just advise handcuffing yourself in case things go south with a secondary tight end also in that range, especially if you’re smart and you play best ball formats. Bo Nix has proven he can support a stable passing attack and Engram should be a vital piece of that. Denver didn’t sign this guy because he can block…
