Fantasy Football: Aaron Rodgers Signs With Steelers

No more speculating. The news is official. Aaron Rodgers is the newest member of the Pittsburgh Steelers. I don’t see any reason to take forever on this one, but the Rodgers addition, now that it’s official, does have some interesting angles in terms of fantasy football. Let’s have a quick chat, and feel free to comment where you agree/disagree!

DK Metcalf is easily the biggest winner of the group. He’s the alpha in the room in a room full of question marks. Guys like Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson, and soon-to-be Allen Lazard? We know those are auxiliary pieces in the offense. Metcalf is the guy, and Rodgers has been training with him all Summer. With the way Rodgers can lock onto receivers that he trusts, Metcalf’s fantasy stock goes through the roof. It would have been difficult to take him seriously had it been the Mason Rudolph or Will Howard show.

Pat Freiermuth is also a big winner. That might change if the Steelers do pull off that Jonnu Smith trade, but Freiermuth is the clear second option in the offense. Again, without a reliable quarterback, maybe Freiermuth doesn’t really produce. Now he has a legit chance to. I like Freiermuth as a sneaky top 12 option at tight end. I don’t think that’s crazy.

In terms of Rodgers, he should look better than he did with the Jets, but he’s still 41. You’re not getting any real rushing upside, and you know Mike Tomlin is going to play it safe. This is a run-the-ball, play defense type of team. Preferably, he’s your QB3 in superflex who shifts into your lineup if he has a strong week. Not that Rodgers can’t produce. I just wouldn’t want to count on him. He should be a depth piece for your team in an ideal scenario.

Dynasty managers, don’t be afraid to trade Rodgers if someone in your league gets crazy with the news that drops. I don’t view Rodgers as a lost cause in Pittsburgh. There’s just no way he’s going to be someone who carries you in fantasy, given the lack of rushing at this stage of his career. 28 passing touchdowns last year isn’t nothing. I’d like to think he can be around that number this year, and if that’s the case, he’s a nice depth quarterback in superflex.
