Exposing Myself On My Biggest NFL Draft Whiffs: Bryce Love

I’m sure some of you don’t even remember Bryce Love. There was a moment in time when he was legitimately the best running back in college football. It just didn’t last long, and it ended in tragedy. This is my attempt to apologize for leading you down the wrong path. Love turned into a bust, and my blind spot got the best of me.

Heading into the 2019 NFL Draft, Love was the number one running back on my list prior to that college football season being played. The former Stanford product tore his ACL in his final college game. I never gave up on him pretending like the injury never happened. That was a mistake.

Look, I’m not a doctor, but it’s served as a reminder to myself that running backs coming off big knee injuries, they probably won’t come back the same, or there’s no guarantee that they will come back the same. Had I been running a team, I would have flushed a draft pick down the toilet.

Honestly, I probably shouldn’t even blame myself. Who didn’t fall quite literally in love with Love when he rushed for 2,118 yards at 8.1 yards per carry as a junior? You want to know why players opt out of games when it’s not competing for a National Title? It’s for reasons like this. Love never recovered from his knee injury and never got meaningful snaps at the NFL level. A lesson learned that no matter how much I love the player, a knee injury to a back could be a curtain-shutting moment.
