The Jaguars are keeping Evan Engram in Jacksonville for at least another year. The seven-year tight end is expected to be franchise tagged by the team, according to Adam Schefter.
After playing just one season in Duval, the deal will be worth over $11 million, a salary that would make Engram one of the top 10 highest paid tight ends in 2023.
Despite being more productive towards the end of last season, Engram’s 2022 stats were only moderately impressive. An increased role in the offense is likely now that he has signed a larger deal.
Engram has shown flashes of potential since entering the league as a rookie in 2017, but has never fulfilled expectations of being an every down tight end in the NFL.
Engram was a solid player for the Jaguars in 2022, though it still seems like he is not playing to his full potential. Franchise tagging Engram will allow Jacksonville to move on from him next offseason if they do not see improvement.
However, if Engram is able to consistently produce for an entire season, this will be an underrated investment by the Jaguars. A team that has a young and growing explosive offense.
The Jaguars seem to be a legitimate team after the unexpected success they achieved in 2022.
Jacksonville came together as a team in the second half of their season to win six out of their last seven games. A Week 18 win against the Titans clinched the team’s first division title since 2017. The team then proceeded to pull off an insane comeback victory during the wild card round against the Chargers.
In just one season, head coach Doug Pederson turned a team that had the league’s worst record for consecutive seasons, into potential contenders.
The offense is led by a dynamic list of young stars like Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, Christian Kirk and Engram. Still one of the youngest teams in the league, the Jaguars are poised to be a problem for years potentially. Led by a great head coach, a formidable quarterback, and a roster of young promising players on both sides of the ball, Jacksonville could be building something special.
