England Will Not Win Euros 2024 Unless Southgate Changes

England is far and away the most talented team in the Euros and probably the world right now. They have an embarrassment of riches across every single position with the freedom and flexibility to play any style yet its always been the same old story with them the past few major tournaments. All the talent in the world, but no trophies to show for it. The biggest reason why is Gareth Southgate and unless he seriously changes his approach, there should be no reason to expect a new result this time around the the Euros 2024.

For starters, Southgate has already made an unthinkable mistake in leaving Marcus Rashford out of the squad at Euros 2024. The Manchester United superstar would be the first to tell you he didn’t have a season up to his usual standards, but that is by no means justification to leave arguably your best attacker in the last five years at home. Rashford’s profile is one that isn’t found in the squad currently and without his pace on the wings, and ability to be an elite outlet, the England squad is already deficient. Him, Harry Kane, and Bukayo Saka are a dream front trio of skill, speed, creativity, and finishing but with Rashford at home the LW position has become a total toss-up. Regardless of who fills the position, odds are they won’t be able to bring to the table what Marcus Rashford could have.

Now moving on to the rest of the team, the other issue is Southgate’s infatuation with players that just aren’t that good. Connor Gallagher is not a top player and is nowhere near that level but seems to be in line for a healthy amount of minutes. Phil Foden is a good carrier of the ball that can really strike the ball but that’s about it meanwhile he seems to be regarded by Southgate as worthy of being an offensive focal point. Kyle Walker has gotten to the point where his real strength is just his experience and pace. His on-ball play is mediocre and actual defending is nowhere near where it used to be. Trent Alexander-Arnold is the RB that England so desperately needs but Southgate will likely just ride it out again with Walker. This is probably the most disheartening decision to see as Alexander-Arnold is a creative mastermind and sees the field unlike anyone else in the squad. His brilliance in the English Premier League is genuinely rivaled only by the likes of Kevin De Breuyne, Bruno Fernandes, or Martin Ødegaard.

The talent is there and everyone knows it. The sad part is, unless Southgate makes some drastic changes, football will not be coming home this year. He can’t bring Marcus Rashford back to join this star-studded England squad but he can do a better job of maximizing his talent. I don’t think it’s likely he does though, which is why I foresee another sad ending for English fans.
