The England FA Has Rightfully Backed Their Players After The Euro Final

The England FA stood behind their players after some were victims of online abuse after the Euro 2020 Final. A tweet posted last night also called for the abusers to be punished as severely as possible. It was a thrilling game that ended in heartbreak via a penalty shootout at Wembley Stadium. It looked like smooth sailing for the Three Lions after converting their first two spot-kicks, but the young trio of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Bukayo Saka consecutively failed to score. Rashford hit the left post and Italian goalie Gianluigi Donnaruma stopped both Sancho and Saka. It was an unimaginably tough pill to swallow but the racial abuse directed at the players was completely unacceptable. Fans must keep their emotions in check, especially on social media.

It is understandable that fans were upset, of course. Sports have winners and losers, and nobody wants to be the loser. However, that anger in no way justifies racist and prejudiced remarks directed toward the players, and the trio did not even feature prominently throughout the tournament. Eyebrows were likely raised over the fact that manager Gareth Southgate had them take penalties over more established penalty takers like Jack Grealish or Jordan Henderson.

We Should All Take A Second

England fans everywhere must be feeling down. I get it. With the shortcomings on the pitch, it is easy to forget all of the good that has come of it. Rashford’s efforts to feed the English youth during the pandemic have been nothing short of heroic. Sancho and Saka have also done their fair share of giving back to communities in need. Not all is lost despite England losing in the final. Fans will just have to wait a little longer until football comes home.
