Eden Hazard Wants to Stay at Real Madrid Despite Rumors of an Exit

Eden Hazard has had a complicated two years at Real Madrid, but he doesn’t want to leave any time soon. When he joined the Spanish side in the summer of 2019, there was hope that the dribbling skills and playmaking shown for seven years at Chelsea would translate to La Liga. It really hasn’t, and the nagging injuries haven’t helped. Hazard, who only missed 20 games in his time at the west London club, has missed 59 matches for the Spanish giants since his arrival.

His injuries could be just one asterisk on a brilliant career in Madrid, but the constant knocks keeping him from games has the Real Madrid staff, and fans, frustrated and impatient. And Hazard didn’t help his cause with the Madrid faithful when he was seen laughing and chatting with ex-Chelsea teammates following Real Madrid’s Champions League semifinal defeat to the eventual champions.

The incident was criticized by pundits and fans alike, with much of the scorn directed at Hazard’s appeared ignorance surrounding the magnitude of the defeat. He later apologized, but that likely hasn’t eased the tension between he and the club.

The Belgian winger is currently representing his country at the 2020(1) European Championship. Despite his recent form, his incorporation into the squad can elevate Belgium into serious contenders for the title. Following the team’s 3-0 group stage win over Russia, he spoke to the Belgian press about his injuries and playing time at Real Madrid.

“I’m only myself when I can enjoy myself on the pitch. That hasn’t happened in the last two years at Madrid,” Hazard told Belgium’s Het Nieuwsblad. “If you have one or two injuries you can flip the switch, you recover to come back stronger, but if it’s five, six, seven it’s much more difficult mentally. But I keep going.”

Since the summer transfer window opened, speculation has swirled regarding Hazard’s future at Real Madrid. There were rumors of a potential move back to Chelsea, and that the club was willing to sell the Belgian for the right price. For right now though, Hazard insists that Madrid is where he wants to stay.

“I won’t leave there as a failure. I only want to show that I’m made for Real Madrid.”

Belgium and Hazard’s 2020(1) European Championship efforts will continue with group stage matches against Denmark and Finland in the coming week.
