East Carolina fired Mike Houston at the end of October. Blake Harrell took over the program on an interim basis and decided to not lose since. After a 4-0 start to his ECU tenure, the Purple Pirates have removed the interim tag and will name Harrell their new head coach.
Pete Thamel over at ESPN was the first to report the news:
“East Carolina is set to promote interim coach Blake Harrell to be its next coach, sources told ESPN on Monday.“
“ECU’s board still needs to meet to formally approve a contract for Harrell, sources told ESPN. That meeting has been scheduled for 10 a.m. ET Wednesday.“
ECU is now 7-4 on the season after beating Temple, Florida Atlantic, Tulsa, and North Texas the last four weeks. New quarterback Katin Houser has thrown 13 touchdowns during that stretch too. A move that also needed to be made quickly after ECU realized Jake Garcia was trash.
Harrell, 46, was previously the defensive coordinator before taking the head coaching job. He also has previous experience at Lenoir-Rhyne, The Citadel, and Kennesaw State. Time will tell if this proves to be the right hire.
I still think it’s a little insane the program hasn’t called since winning the National Title but that’s their prerogative. You would think they would want to positive publicity but that’s on them. Respect Gamer Trey. That’s all that really needs to be said to close out this post. For more content in that area, click here!
