After narrowing his list down to the Cowboys and Eagles, Shaq Leonard has chosen the latter and will sign with the Philadelphia Eagles. Jordan Schultz was among the first to break the news.
This move doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone, as it was clear that the Eagles were in the market for Leonard. They have seen injuries to guys like Nakobe Dean and Zach Cunningham, leaving them super thin at Linebacker.
But the addition of Shaq Leonard should give them some depth at the position, along with some veteran leadership for guys like Dean.
It’s a one-year deal, although details regarding the money have yet to be released.
What is for certain is that this Eagle’s defensive unit needed the help. If it wasn’t clear a few weeks ago, the 49ers did a good job of making it crystal clear. This defense needs help and will 100% hold them back from a championship if nothing changes.
Giving up a touchdown on six straight drives should never happen, especially if you are a team trying to compete for a Super Bowl. But the Niners made it look easy and exposed this defense in a way we haven’t really seen.
But the addition of Shaq Leonard should hopefully help right this ship. Sure, he isn’t the same player he was when he was making first-team All-Pro with the Colts. But he still has some left in the tank and certainly will be an upgrade in the Linebacker room.
The question now becomes, is it enough? This defense has issues that expand past a 28-year-old linebacker past his prime. But seeing as we’re past the trade deadline, I guess this is the best you can really do.
Leonard brings with him six years of experience, three of which earned him a first-team All-Pro nod. Along with three Pro Bowl selections and being the 2018 Defensive Rookie of the Year.
