Life certainly comes at you fast. One minute, you are celebrating your first Super Bowl win, the next you are hitting free agency. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that the Philadelphia Eagles are releasing Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay. The move could save the Eagles $4.3 million against their cap if they designate him a post-June 1 release. Slay had been with the Eagles for the last five seasons.
Slay, 34, helped the Philadelphia Eagles defeat the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX 40-22, thwarting the Chiefs shot at history at a three-peat. NBC Sports Philadelphia’s John Clark is reporting that the Eagles and Slay might have mutual interest in a new contract at a lower cost hit, but the veteran is sure to have some suitors calling him. However, if there is a potential for a reunion in the city of brotherly love on the heels of a Super Bowl win, who wouldn’t want to go back?
Darius Slay was hampered by injuries this season, but he still showed some left in the tank. It’s safe to say he likely had a huge hand in the development of rookie cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean, both of which had breakout years in year one. A veteran presence in the locker room to continue to mentor those young guys would be massive for their careers, but is it needed? Mitchell looks like a future All-Pro, and DeJean played very well down the stretch, including a pick-six in the Super Bowl, his first INT of his career.
Darius Slay became an Eagle in a trade during the 2020 season and has been a captain each of the last three seasons. In his 74 games played with the Eagles, he totaled 272 total tackles, 56 PBU’s (pass breakups), nine interceptions, and three fumble recoveries. Three of his six Pro Bowl appearances came while in Philadelphia, with the other three coming with the Detroit Lions.
