The Eagles Drafting DeVonta Smith Was The Best Thing To Happen to Jalen Reagor

The Philadelphia Eagles have drawn the short straw when drafting wide receivers recently. In 2019, the team drafted J.J. Arcega-Whiteside before DK Metcalf and drafted Jalen Reagor over Justin Jefferson, Michael Pittman Jr., and Tee Higgins in 2020. However, in the 2021 NFL draft, the Eagles finally caught a break and landed Alabama star receiver and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith.

The Eagles drafting Smith may give Reagor the kickstart he needs. Not only does Smith provide more competition in the Eagles’ wide receiver room, but Reagor and the others can learn from the Heisman Trophy winner. Reagor had a disappointing rookie season with 31 receptions for 391 yards and one touchdown in 11 games, and although the Eagles did suffer from unrest at quarterback, undrafted wide receiver Travis Fulgham had 67 receptions for 539 yards and four touchdowns in just two more games with the exact same quarterbacks.

Smith is entering the Eagles’ offense as the clear number one wide receiver and his presence should alleviate some pressure from the rest of the offense, especially Smith’s fellow receivers. Reagor had this to say about Smith being drafted by the Eagles:

“It was a great thing for this organization to do, bring another weapon on the field, another weapon in our receiver room, and we’re going to complement each other well,” Reagor said, “Like he said in [a recent] interview, there’s things that I can do that he isn’t doing and vice versa. To me, it’s going to make our room much better, make our team much better.”

I agree with nearly everything that Reagor said, as Smith will complement the other wide receivers well, but I would ask Reagor what he can do that Smith cannot. In the end, the Eagles needed a true number one wide receiver and more weapons around Jalen Hurts, and the team solved both by drafting Smith.
