Eagles Add AJ Dillon As Backup Running Back

You have to give the Eagles this. They win the quad award for the runners on their team. Between Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and now AJ Dillon, no other team can compete!

Okay, back to reality. There, I tried to do a creative intro. Can’t say I never do! It was there for the taking. Dillon has previously been referred to as “The Quadfather” and “Quadzilla”. I’m just stating facts.

But anyway… AJ Dillon is signing a one-year contract with the Eagles to be the backup in Philadelphia behind Saquon Barkley.

FOX Sports’ Jordan Schultz was the first to report this news.

Dillon, 26, will replace Kenneth Gainwell as the backup. Gainwell moved across the state to Pittsburgh this offseason.

As for the Packers, Dillon has fallen out of favor there. Josh Jacobs is the unquestioned guy. They drafted MarShawn Lloyd fairly high despite the fact that he in fact sucks. Really it’s Emanuel Wilson who started to emerge as the primary backup a season ago.

The former Boston College product has notched 2,428 rushing yards on 597 carries (a 4.1-yard rushing average), 16 rushing touchdowns, and 2 receiving scores. That’s in 60 career games played. He didn’t play a single game last year after missing the season with injury.

Feel free to comment but this feels like a good gamble for the Eagles. One way to keep Barkley fresh to to sign a guy like Dillon who can handle those bruising short yardage reps. On paper, it’s a solid plan. Really it’s a matter of if Dillon has anything left coming off a season where he didn’t play.
