Dustin Poirier Reports Broken Ribs and Partially Torn ACL After UFC 302 Loss

After a tough loss in UFC 302 against Islam Makhachev, Dustin Poirier states that he suffers from a litany of injuries. The lightweight division title fight went into the fifth round before Makhachev submitted Poirier. Four days after the fight Poirier took to X to describe the injuries that followed the lightweight bout.

Poirier and Makhachev swapped around 150 strikes between each other during the fight at UFC 302 in Newark, New Jersey. Poirier received about fourteen more significant strikes than Makhachev before submitting.

Although the injuries Poirier sustained may not come as a shock to those who watched the fight, there is speculation that Poirier may of stepped into the octagon already battling hurt ribs. Yves Edwards, a coach at American Top Team and friend of Poirier, shared with MMA Today that Poirier may of been injured previously during the weeks leading up to the fight.

However, this wouldn’t be the first time that Poirier has gone into a fight already injured. Edwards states that when Poirier fought Benoit Saint-Denis at UFC 299 he was again, dealing with hurt ribs. That previous injury didn’t prevent Dustin “The Diamond” to take the win over Saint-Denis. Even knowing that Poirier can still perform incredibly against the French fighter while injured, Islam Makhachev is an entirely different beast.

After 40 fights, we may never see the 35-year-old return to the octagon. Poirier has already solidified his stellar career as a UFC lightweight division fighter and thinks he might not have much more to prove. Although, if Poirier can heal up in time there is still Volkanovski’s offer of a final fight between the two legends.
