Dustin Pedroia Will Attempt To Return In 2020

Have we seen the last of Dustin Pedroia? I sure as hell hope not. Still, the facts are the Pedey has played 9 games since 2018. Pedroia has undergone three separate knee surgeries since 2017. That hope is dwindling. Pedey is going to give it everything he has in order to return to the field in 2020. If he does, it would be an enormous lift to the Sox who had 2nd base problems since he went on the shelf.

Christopher Smith spoke to Chaim Bloom who reported the following on Pedroia:

“Every indication I’ve gotten is he’s feeling good and intending on playing,” Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said Monday at the GM Meetings.

“I know he’s working really hard to make sure he’s in as good of shape as possible,” Bloom said.

Pedroia, 36, is a career .299 hitter, 4-time gold glover, and MVP in 2013. Pedey is probably the best 2nd baseman in the history of the franchise. Certainly the most accomplished who was part of 3 championship teams. Pedroia epitomizes everything that Boston is. Chip on the shoulder, told you were never good enough, work your tail off kind of guy. Pedroia is a 5-foot-9 bald headed psycho and I love him. I’ll never doubt the guy.

If the Red Sox can actually get a healthy Pedroia, it would be an enormous boost. Michael Chavis can slide in as the everyday first baseman. Marco Hernandez can do Marco Hernandez things. If they bring back Brock Holt, he comes a nice utility man. Nevertheless, the Sox are on the hook for the former Arizona State product regardless of whether he plays or not. He’s owed $25 million over the next two years.
