Kevin Durant discusses Nets tenure in introductory Suns press conference

After spending three and a half seasons with the Brooklyn Nets, Kevin Durant was traded in a deadline blockbuster to the Phoenix Suns. The Suns held his introductory press conference at the Footprint Center on Thursday. Durant used this platform to speak fondly on his time in Brooklyn.

Many will remember the Brooklyn Nets as an example of how to turn a super team into a logistical failure. In nearly three seasons together, the All-NBA trio of Durant, Kyrie Irving and James Harden managed to win a single postseason series.

“We just didn’t get on the court enough,” Durant said. “I think when you’ve seen James, Kyrie, and myself, it was amazing basketball – for (16) games, though. In order for you to win a championship and be a great team, you just need more time on the floor.”

When asked about Irving’s trade request and subsequent departure, Durant said this: “I was upset that we couldn’t finish. I thought that we had some good momentum. We were finally building the culture that we always wanted.”

Maybe the reason the Nets experiment failed was availability. The Big 3 never had the chance to build any consistency. It also could’ve been a myriad of off-court issues involving both Irving and Harden.

Durant held firm through all the turmoil and negative media attention. He focused on basketball. In the end, he had nothing negative to say about his former team.

“I love those guys,” Durant said. “I get emotional talking about it, because that was a special four years of my career, coming off that Achilles (injury). They helped me through a lot.”

Durant added he expects to return from his knee injury “soon after” the All-Star break.
