The Warriors are having a great postseason thus far, pulling off an upset against Houston in round one. Now, they are split 1-1 against the Minnesota Timberwolves in round two. However, Warriors forward Draymond Green has not had the easiest NBA Playoffs.
He has been battling every single night and bringing the intensity on defense. Unfortunately, this has led to a lot of technical and flagrant fouls. However, Green thinks these calls are unfair, and he is specifically being targeted.
This video shows a frustrated Draymond Green after a Game 2 loss in the Western Conference Semifinals. The Warriors were outgunned in a 117-93 loss without star player Stephen Curry. Also, in the middle of the second quarter, Green picked up his fifth technical foul of the NBA Playoffs. Furthermore, if he gets two more technical fouls in the playoffs, he will have to serve a one-game suspension. Also, Green has two flagrant fouls in this season’s playoffs.
He has seven major fouls in nine NBA Playoff games. These numbers are wild and objectively high for any player. Now, it will be tough to completely have a definitive ruling if all these fouls are legit technicals. There are specific criteria guidelines to help referees know when to upgrade to a more serious foul. However, a lot of foul calls are subjective, so multiple people can come to different conclusions on each play.
Draymond Green has a history of dirty plays, so he puts himself in these tough situations. On the other hand, Green clearly thinks he is receiving unfair treatment from the officials. He has made his voice publicly heard, so it will be intriguing to see what happens the rest of the series.
Green used specific language in his post-game that he knew would catch people’s attention. Green, who was understandably emotional after a loss, said the officials were unfairly stereotyping him as the reason for why he might be receiving these calls.
Now, he is right, America and media throughout American history have frequently portrayed black men in this negative light. Also, they have used these attacks against black women, especially strong black women and women in positions of power.
I can see the connection Green made. In fact, it is known that referees in the past have singled out players unfairly, such as Allen Iverson. Now, people can come to their own conclusions about why Iverson might have had a bias towards him. However, ultimately, I do believe there is no outright collusion against Green by the referees.
I think Green is a high motor, defensively aggressive, and psychologically aggressive player who tries to get under opponents’ skins. This play style can open someone up to receiving a lot of technicals and flagrant fouls. I do not believe Draymond Green deserves every one of his fouls, but then again, I could say that for any player.
Ultimately, I do believe there is bias against Green at times because of his history as a player, right or wrong. I am not sure the referees are directly targeting Draymond to push a nasty ‘angry black man’ narrative. One thing is for sure: Draymond Green vs. the referees in game three will get people’s attention after Green’s game two post-game comments.
