It’s not as bad as it sounds. Current Golden State Warriors forward and four-time NBA champion Draymond Green is notorious for his hot–or downright awful–takes. However, when weighing in on the departure of long-time teammate Klay Thompson, Green showed a side of sympathy and compassion most people wouldn’t expect of him.
Appearing on the Club 520 Podcast, Green made it clear that he valued the well-being of his teammates far more than anything else. Thompson’s move to the Mavericks came after one of the most “trying” seasons of Green’s career, compounding the emotional toll.
“I’m happy he’s gone because he wasn’t happy anymore,” Green recently said on the Club 520 Podcast. “As a brother, I only want what’s best for you, not what’s best for me, not what’s best for this team. We spent so much time around each other and to see him unhappy the way I saw him unhappy last year… to see someone that does not have a single care in the world all of a sudden can’t shake nothing, that bothered me. It was time.”
He told his hosts that he witnessed a transformation in Thompson that bothered him. Green described the Thompson of days passed as a very easy-going and carefree guy, an attitude that seemed to disappear during the 2023-2024 season.
With Thompson’s exit, the future of the Golden State Warriors has become even more uncertain. During the Club 520 interview, Draymond Green hinted that he might only have a couple more years left in the tank.
The trade talks for Lauri Markkanen sit in limbo. To cap it all off, Stephen Curry recently commented that he might request a trade if he felt the team was no longer competitive. The pressure is on.
