Don’t Eat The Cheese! 2024 Fantasy Baseball: Second Baseman

Slowly and surely Vendetta Sports Media will establish itself as the premier go to site for fantasy sports. You can laugh at that statement all you want but the evidence doesn’t lie. I own fantasy hockey (RIP Sean Allen). Matthew Berry was embarrassed. In 2024 we’re throwing our hat in the fantasy baseball realm and the Don’t Eat The Cheese series will return to cover MLB.

For now, I don’t have anything against ESPN’s fantasy baseball department. Time will tell if that changes. In the meantime, I’m just going to give you busts. Any player that’s ranked too high inside the top 50, we’re going to expose them together.

*Link to ESPN rankings. They constantly change so don’t shoot the messenger if they’re updated after publication.

Marcus Semien (Texas Rangers) -2B2, 21st overall

This ranking is a joke. Look, I don’t hate Marcus Semien but WTF are we doing? He’s heading into his age 33 season and just had the year of his life. This is baseball. He’s not repeating that. Want to hear something even crazier? Semien has been third in every odd season over the last six years. The other three years during the even years he did not make the voting. It’s an even year this year. Even if it wasn’t, the idea you’re going to take Semien this high is absurd.

Ketel Marte (Arizona Diamondbacks) -2B5, 43rd overall

I don’t really get this one either. Outside of having position versatility, why would I pick Marte within the top 45 picks? The guy hit 25 homers out of nowhere last year when he’s only ever matched that mark once. Better yet, excluding his lone All-Star Season in 2019, he’s never hit 15 homers in a season. Nice utility player but c’mon. Let’s be real. Jeff McNeil is 62 spots lower. Tommy Edman is ranked in the 200 area. Are we really doing this because the Diamondbacks made some weird postseason run that doesn’t even count for fantasy?

Honorable Mention: Nico Hoerner

Solid glove, the bat isn’t nearly good enough to warrant this ranking. He’s ranked as 2B7 and 62nd overall. The guy above him on the list is Luis Arraez. Can we chill out a little on Hoerner? He also doesn’t for power at all which defeats any purpose in drafting him this high.
