Domantas Sabonis signs five-year contract extension worth $217 million with Kings

Domantas Sabonis signs five-year contract extension worth $217 million with Kings

After a season filled with winning for the Sacramento Kings, they have rewarded their star power forward in Domantas Sabonis. Sabonis and the Kings have agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $217 million, including $195 million in new money. Adrian Wojnarowski reports of the news.

Only a few years back, Domantas Sabonis was on the Indiana Pacers. After a blockbuster trade for the former young Kings, guard Tyrese Haliburton, the future changed in Sacramento.

Ever since being traded to the Kings, Sabonis has been a dynamic duo with point guard De’Aaron Fox. The two have slowly brought the Kings into the playoffs in only two years, and with their first playoffs appearance since 2006, there is no stopping Sac-Town now.

Last season, Sabonis became an even bigger force for the Kings. Improving his shooting numbers drastically from the year before. Sabonis saw a 7% increase in his field goal percentage to 62% and a 14% increase in his three-ball to 37%. In the 2022-23 season, Sabonis around 19 points, 12 rebounds, and a career high 7.3 assists.

Not everything has been so bright and happy for the Kings when traded for Sabonis. NBA analyst J. J. Redick highly disliked the Kings trading for him, saying the Pacers won in a landslide.

All of the all-encompassing advanced stats, single metric stats, who’s the best player? It’s been Tyrese. And the second-best player on the team for the Kings this year has been Harrison [Barnes]. That is a fact,” Redick said, via NBC Sports. “I don’t give a f–k how many points a guy averages. That doesn’t mean s–t. Tyrese Haliburton plays basketball exactly how basketball should be played.”

Well, Redick couldn’t be more wrong. He would eventually apologize, saying that the trade was a “win win” and eat his words. But now, the Kings have kept their superstar around for a lot longer and look to complete their championship hopes.
