We knew things would probably be bumpy for Nick Chubb in his return from the devastating knee injury the season prior. The former Georgia product looked like a shell of himself and then suffered a broken foot to end the season.
Chubb, 28, is scheduled to hit free agency this offseason. Even after a season where he averaged 3.3 yards per carry, the Browns seem very interested in bringing him back.
CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones had the following:
“Running back Nick Chubb is in the final year of his deal that got restructured this offseason after his gruesome leg injury last year. Chubb, who turns 29 next month, will have a full offseason to train rather than rehab, and there’s a strong belief Cleveland wants to retain Chubb both for his playmaking abilities and what he means to the culture of the franchise.”
Bringing Chubb back makes all the sense in the world. This is the first season where he’s averaged less than five yards per carry in a season. It will be another season removed from the knee injury and it’s not like he’s crossed the dangerous 30-years-old barrier. Jerome Ford is already under contract next year too. As long as Cleveland drafts one more back, it’s a running back room that makes a ton of sense.
The culture part of this can’t be ignored. It’s hard enough finding players who want to be in Cleveland. It seems like Chubb loves it there and that part has to be accounted for.
