Less than a week after requesting a trade away from the organization, the Seattle Seahawks have traded wide receiver DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for their 2025 second-round pick, NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero were among the first to report Sunday.
Metcalf, who was entering the final year of his current contract ($18 million cap hit), will sign a four-year, $132 million extension–effectively making it a five-year, $150 million deal, according to Pelissero.
The amount of guaranteed money embedded in the new deal has not been disclosed at the time of this publishing.
Metcalf requested a trade after six seasons in Seattle last week. Last year, he caught 66 passes for 992 yards and five touchdowns, the fewest of his career.
The former second-round pick will now be paired with George Pickens, though there are questions about who will be behind center for Pittsburgh entering 2025. Metcalf already has a rapport with Russell Wilson, but ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday that the Steelers are “leaning” toward reuniting with Justin Fields, which Garrett has been a huge proponent of.
Whomever the signal caller is will likely determine the fate of this trade. Conceptually, this is a downgrade for Metcalf because the Steelers’ passing attack has been worse than Seattle’s over the last several years. Giving up a second-round pick does have risk–even with four extra years of Metcalf throughout the rest of his prime.
