Dez Bryant doesn’t think Brian Schottenheimer will succeed with Cowboys

One week after Black Monday, the Dallas Cowboys elected not to bring head coach Mike McCarthy for a sixth season after he coached the duration of his contract. Dallas was behind the 8-ball from the start, eventually hiring offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as the team’s next head coach on Friday.

Jerry Jones’ process of hiring Schottenheimer rightfully got slammed by the media. But so did the hire of Schottenheimer itself, including from former Cowboys wideout Dez Bryant.

“I honestly don’t know how to feel right now. I’m trying to understand what Jerry meant by saying he was ‘all in,’” Bryant wrote on Twitter Friday evening. “Maybe the coach is good, maybe he’s not, but my energy towards how the Cowboys have been mixing things doesn’t feel like success anytime soon.

“I’m really looking forward to hearing Jerry’s reason for this..saying this is what the players wanted…I’ll argue that only 1 or 2 players were asked..and it was framed as what the team wanted…Somebody in the organization needs to step up and tell Jerry that the old ways of thinking don’t exist in this new era.”

Schottenheimer has a very shaky track record as an offensive coordinator, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he can’t be a decent head coach. He will need (or Jerry) to hire the right people around him and will need to have good leadership qualities. The roster is good, but whether either of those two things happens–among other qualities–remains to be seen.

I still think it’s bad process from Jones to take yourself out of Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel and other coveted candidates. The Cowboys are also in a tough division sans the dysfunctional New York Giants. I think they can still compete, but we shall see whether or not Schottenheimer will be the true answer to their problems.

What do you think about the Dallas Cowboys’ new head coach? Let us know in the comments!
