The New York Giants got crushed inside Metlife Stadium to open their season against the Minnesota Vikings.
Minnesota, playing with a new quarterback in Sam Darnold, dominated 28-6, finishing with three more first downs and 72 more yards despite running 17 fewer plays. It was a sloppy game from both teams, combining for four turnovers and 16 penalties (158 yards), but the Vikings outmanned their counterpart on both sides of the ball.
Throughout the onslaught, Giants fans booed. After the game, star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence did not appreciate the Giant faithful booing, even though he understood why they did.
“I don’t respect it, honestly,” Lawrence said after the game. “I get it, they want to see their team win. It’s just a rough patch. It is what it is.”
The Giants finished with the fourth-worst record in the NFC last year at 6-11, and are well on their way to being one of the worst again after losing both Saquon Barkley and Xavier McKinney this offseason.
In all fairness, Lawrence, a two-time All-Pro, gave Giants fans one of the few reasons to cheer on Sunday. He finished with three combined tackles and one sack in the first half; he was their most impactful defensive presence by a fair margin, even though that was a low bar.
All in all, it could be another long season in New York. Brian Flores played mind games with Giants quarterback Daniel Jones all afternoon. Worst of all, the Giants couldn’t push the ball downfield–at all–against a beleaguered Vikings secondary. It’s only Week 1, but yikes!
