Devin Booker signs record-setting extension with Suns

Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker has signed a two-year record-setting max extension, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Wednesday.

The deal will be for $145 million with a $70.1 million starting salary, beginning in 2028-29. His $72.5 million average annual value will be the biggest for any extension in NBA History.

As time goes on, more players will begin to approach or pass his AAV. This number assumes the cap will increase by 10 percent each of the next three seasons after 2026-27, when there will only be a ~7 percent cap increase (lower than the original projected number).

Current cap projections, according to RealGM, have the league’s cap increasing roughly five percent each season through 2031, which would lower Booker’s aforementioned extension number, which will be whatever 35 percent of the cap is in ’28-29.

Booker was reportedly involved in the Suns’ thorough head coaching search and is expected to be the lone wolf back between he, Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal. As talented as Durant is, choosing between him and Booker at this stage of their respective careers is a fairly easy decision.

Now the pressure will be on Brian Gregory, Mat Ishbia and the rest of the Suns’ front office to supply Booker with a winner. The Suns have been busy this offseason, trading Durant for Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks (plus draft capital) while adding rookies Khaman Maluach and Rasheer Fleming, plus Hornets big man Mark Williams.

That’s not a bad start, all things considered.

It’s still going to a massive uphill climb to compete in the Western Conference. They’re still devoid of future draft assets and will need to figure out the Booker-Green-Brooks dynamic, which could get tricky. It’s going to be difficult if they can’t find a reliable rim-runner, quality depth off the bench and two-way versatility.
