Lions GM Brad Holmes Is Confident Detroit Can Win NFC North in 2023

The Detroit Lions have been on a rollercoaster ride in recent years, struggling to find their footing in the competitive NFC North division. However, the winds of change are blowing in the Motor City, and much of the optimism surrounding the team’s future can be attributed to their general manager, Brad Holmes.

In a recent statement, Holmes expressed his belief that the Lions will emerge victorious in the NFC North this year.

Holmes said Friday his confidence is “very high,” according to ESPN’s Eric Woodyard.

We’ve gone through a lot of darkness to get to this place,” Holmes said.

Holmes, who took over as the Lions’ general manager in January 2021, has been working diligently to reshape the team’s roster and culture. His vision for the franchise is rooted in a commitment to long-term success, and he has shown no hesitation in making bold moves to achieve that goal.

One of Holmes’ most significant moves was trading for quarterback Jared Goff and selecting promising talents like Penei Sewell. These strategic decisions reflect his commitment to building a strong foundation for the team’s future. Holmes firmly believes the Lions are on the right track, even if their rebuilding doesn’t bring immediate success

Holmes’ confidence in the Lions’ potential to win the NFC North this season is based on several key factors. He recognizes how impactful draft picks and acquisitions are for fortifying the offense and defense. The Lions’ young talent integration is key to pursuing and winning the division title.

The Lions have drafted very well over the past three years. 2021 picks turned into Sewell and Amon-Ra St. Brown, who have become key players in the Lions’ offense.

They drafted Aidan Hutchinson No. 2 overall in 2022, who will be coming into his second year in the NFL after posting 9.5 sacks in his rookie campaign. Jameson Williams, Malcolm Rodriguez and Kerby Joseph were all taken in that draft as well.

In 2023, the team drafted electric running back Jahmyr Gibbs, along with Sam Laporta, who many believe was the best tight end in the draft. Jack Campbell, Brian Branch and Hendon Hooker were taken as well.

Furthermore, Holmes has emphasized the importance of a unified team culture. He believes that building a cohesive and motivated group of players is essential to achieving success in the NFL. By fostering an environment of trust and hard work, Holmes aims to create a Lions team that is hungry for victory.

Additionally, Holmes has been working closely with head coach Dan Campbell to establish a winning mentality within the organization. Campbell’s passion and determination have resonated with both players and fans, instilling a sense of optimism that has been missing in Detroit for some time.

Of course, winning the NFC North won’t be easy. The division features formidable opponents like the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings. However, the Packers recently lost Aaron Rodgers, and while the Vikings went 13-4 last year, they won 11 games by one score, something that is highly unlikely to happen again.

Brad Holmes’ vision and commitment to excellence have injected renewed hope into the Lions’ fan base, who are eagerly anticipating a competitive season.

While it’s important to manage expectations, the Detroit Lions are poised for a brighter future. Holmes’ confidence in the team’s ability to secure the NFC North title this year is a testament to his dedication to rebuilding and reshaping the franchise. As the season unfolds, fans will be watching closely to see if his bold prediction becomes a reality.

The team has never won the NFC North. The Lions’ last division crown came in 1993 when they topped the then-NFC Central with a 10-6 record.
