Derrick White has agreed to return to the Boston Celtics on a 4-year $125.9 Million deal. NBA Insider Adrian Wojnarowski was the first to report the news. The deal does include a player option, nevertheless, Derrick White is signed through 2028 to remain in Boston.
White was the Celtics’ top priority this offseason as he is an integral part of the Championship core in Boston. It is important to note that the deal was the max the Celtics could offer Derrick White for him to stay. This deal will not kick in until after next season. White still had one more year on the previous contract.
White is coming off his career-best season, in 73 games averaging 15.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists a game. Shooting 46 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3. Capping off his season with his second All-Defensive team selection and more notably aiding the Celtics to the 2024 NBA Championship.
The most important thing the defending champion Celtics can do is keep their core together. Especially since they have already secured extensions for Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis. Of course, extending Jaylen Brown to the richest contract in NBA History. Now bringing back Derrick White with Jayson Tatum most certainly getting his lucrative extension in the future. With this group now becoming a proven championship team it is now all hands on deck for a potential dynasty.
Since the Celtics traded for Derrick White in 2022, not only has he become a beloved figure in Boston but he has grown into arguably the best role player in the NBA. As an elite shooter, premier defender, and the best shot-blocking guard in basketball it is safe to say he will be worth every penny of this new contract.
