Derrick Jones Jr. has signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Los Angeles Clippers, NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic was first to report Sunday evening.
The Clippers are using most of their $12.8 mid-level exception to sign Jones. Thus, they are now hard-capped below the $178.1 million first apron. They still have $14 million left until they reach the aforementioned apron with 12 players on their roster.
It was a busy Day 1 of free agency for the Clippers, who also made moves for Kevin Porter Jr. (why?) and James Harden, who agreed to a two-year deal to return!
Jones is far from any realm of a Paul George replacement, but he still proved to be a very capable role player. He was one of the best point-of-attack defender on the Western Conference champion Mavericks last year. He averaged 8.6 points and 3.3 rebounds in 23.5 minutes per game, shooting 48.3 percent from the floor and 34.3 percent from 3-point range.
It wasn’t likely that Dallas was going to bring back Jones amid the Naji Marshall addition. Though Jones parlayed a career season into a career payday after having signed a minimum deal with Dallas last offseason. It’s not very common to relinquish the minimum tag years into your career once you earn it.
Fortunately enough for Jones, he found a home in Southern California. I’m interested to see how he plays alongside Harden, Kawhi Leonard and Norman Powell, among others. They needed another multi-versatile defender to replace George, and now they’ve found one.
