The 2023 NFL Draft profiles keep on coming! In this article, we will be taking a deeper look at Auburn’s Derick Hall. Hall had a great Senior Bowl and followed that up with a solid performance at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine. Did he do enough to shoot him up draft boards and plant himself on the draft boards of NFL teams? Let’s dive into it!
At the front of this, I must admit something. I love me some Derick Hall. I had a chance to briefly speak with and listen in on conversations with Hall during my time in Mobile for the Senior Bowl, and the only thing I kept thinking was this dude wants to win. He is a natural-born leader and will thrive in any locker room he is in.
The on-the-field stuff gets me just as excited. He has aggression about him that makes him relentless in his pursuit of the quarterback. He’s as strong as an ox. Long arms (34 1/2″) combined with his strength gives him a good toolset as a power rusher. Great hips. Shows a willingness to break away from his blocker and get outside to chase down a running back or a scrambling quarterback. He showed at the Senior Bowl the ability to get around both power and agile tackles.
My biggest detractor would be his pass coverage. I know that EDGE rushers won’t be asked very often to drop back, but Derick Hall is a liability in coverage. He would be better suited to have his primary responsibility be getting after the quarterback.
I have a day-two grade on Hall. I think he could find himself taken in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft. His strength and relentless determination to get into the backfield should have him shoot up draft boards. Whichever team drafts Hall will be inheriting a natural locker room leader. He will be a very sneaky pickup for whichever team pulls the trigger.
