Derek Watt Retires From The NFL

Last year it was TJ Watt. This year another Watt brother is calling it quits. Derek Watt, the former fullback of the brother trio, has decided to hang up the cleats. The former Chargers and Steelers fullback announced his retirement via social media.

“It is with great honor and gratitude that I officially announce my retirement and the end to my career… A career that ended up being about so much more than just the game that I love. The 7 years with 2 great organizations, 110 career games, and lifelong friendships and memories that I’ve been fortunate enough to make have been nothing short of amazing,” he wrote in a statement posted to X.

“From playing in the backyard, to sharing a field in the NFL, this journey together has been absolutely incredible,” Derek Watt said in his statement. “They say if you want to be great, then you should surround yourself with greatness… You both have pushed me to be the best that I could be and it’s been so special to see all the hard work that we put in and sacrifices that we made pay off!”

It wasn’t exactly the most impactful career ever. It’s more recognition from being in the Watt family. That’s not meant to be harsh. Just a reality. Still, a noteworthy career from the standpoint that Watt was drafted in 2016 and ended up playing with his brother TJ to close his career out. The Chargers took Watt in the 6th round in 2016.

CBS has since hired TJ Watt post-retirement. Maybe Derek will get into the media realm too. Whatever he decides to do next, we here at VSM wish him the best of luck post-retirement.
