The Denver Nuggets have acquired Cam Johnson from the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Michael Porter Jr. and a 2032 first-round pick, ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania first reported Monday.
The Nets had a steep asking price for Johnson at last February’s deadline, ultimately waiting until this summer to move him. Johnson, 29, finished last season averaging 18.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.4 assists on 47.5 percent shooting, including 39.0 percent from distance and 89.5 percent from the free-throw line.
This is a home run for Denver. It shaved $17.3 million off its books for next season. Though as a result of Johnson’s near-$4 million of unlikely bonuses attached to his team-friendly contract, the Nuggets moved $13.6 million below the first apron, nearly opening the entirety of its non-taxpayer mid-level exception.
Denver was seemingly trapped with Porter’s top-heavy salary clogging its books; for as talented as Porter is a shooter, allocating 90 percent of the salary cap between him, Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray is a tough task in today’s two-apron era where every dollar matters.
Johnson is also as good a shooter, a better (self) creator, connective playmaker, rebounder and defender at roughly 60 percent of the cost.
Brooklyn, on the other hand, adds Porter to the mix in addition to Denver’s 2032 pick, their only available tradable first. We don’t know how that will look when Jokic is pushing his mid-30s, but it’s hard to imagine the Nets finding worse value not only this offseason, but at the deadline, for their best asset.
